About

Dr. Anthony L. Komaroff is the Simcox/Clifford/Higby Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Senior Physician at Brigham & Women's Hospital. He maintained a general internal medicine practice from 1970-2015, and remains active as a teacher and investigator.

     Dr. Komaroff has held several leadership positions, including:

  • Director of the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care within the Department of Medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital (1982-1997);
  • Vice President for Management Systems, Brigham & Women's Hospital (1982-1987);
  • Founding Editor of NEJM Journal Watch General Medicine, a publication of the Massachusetts Medical Society/New England Journal of Medicine (1987-today);
  • Co-Director, Program in Clinical Effectiveness, a training program in non-laboratory investigation (clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, etc.) which trains approximately 300 fellows per year from institutions around the world;
  • Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Health Publications Division of Harvard Medical School, responsible for all Harvard Medical School’s consumer health publishing—including books, newsletters, magazine and newspaper columns and Internet content (1997-2015);
  • Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Health Letter (2000-2025);
  • Author of a daily newspaper column syndicated by United Features Syndicate in 450 newspapers in North America (2011-2017).

     Dr. Komaroff has published over 300 research articles and book chapters and 2 books.  In the past 30 years, his publications have been primarily focused on myalgic encephalomyelitis/ chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), a related condition (Long COVID), and on the biology and clinical consequences of infection with human herpesviruses 6A and 6B, which have been linked to several neurological and gynecological conditions. 

     Dr. Komaroff has served on:

  • The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Coordinating Committee of the United States Department of Health and Human Services;
  • The Review Committee on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Research for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention;
  • The Advisory Committee on Adverse Health Outcomes of the Gulf War for the U.S. Institute of Medicine/ National Academy of Sciences. 
  • The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advisory Committee of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
  • A member of the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council Working Group for ME/CFS Research

     Dr. Komaroff is a Project PI on multi-center NIH-funded research on ME/CFS and served as keynote speaker at multiple NIH Conferences on ME/CFS.

     In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Komaroff has been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Physicians, and the Association for Health Services Research.
